How Soft Play Supports Children’s Gross Motor Skills
Soft Play can create an environment where children repeatedly use large-body movements as part of play. Instead of focusing on one isolated action, a play route can invite a child to climb, move up and down, crawl through an opening, reach a platform and slide back down.

The available knowledge supports these relationships, but it does not provide clinical claims, developmental milestones or evidence that a particular amount of Soft Play produces a specific developmental outcome. It is therefore more accurate to understand Soft Play as an environment that provides opportunities to practise gross-motor movement through play.
What are Gross Motor Skills in the context of Soft Play?
For this article, the useful way to think about Gross Motor Skills is through the larger body movements children perform while navigating a play environment.
A Soft Play setup can ask a child to change position repeatedly: move toward an obstacle, climb onto it, cross a platform, lower the body to enter a tunnel, crawl through it, stand again and move toward another element.
Rather than treating Gross Motor Skills as an abstract concept, Soft Play makes these movements part of a play route that children can explore and repeat.
Climbing creates an active movement challenge
Climbing is one of the clearest examples. HOVBB’s canonical knowledge directly associates climbing activities and climbing development with relevant Soft Play designs.
A child approaching a climbing element needs to move the body from one level to another. Different forms can also create different movement experiences. A ramp provides a continuous incline, while stair-like or pillow-shaped climbers divide the route into different levels.
When these elements form part of a larger setup, climbing does not have to be a standalone activity. It can become the beginning of a route that continues onto a platform, through another element or down a slide.
Moving up and down makes the route more complete
Climbing Up & Down expands the play experience beyond simply reaching the top.
In a connected Soft Play configuration, children can move between different heights and choose how to continue through the setup. They might climb onto a platform, move back down the same way, or continue toward another component.
This makes changes in level part of the play itself and gives children repeated opportunities to navigate the structure in different directions.
Crawling changes the child’s body position
Crawling adds another type of gross-motor movement to a Soft Play route. Designs with tunnel platforms can support Tunnel Crawling, requiring the child to move through the structure at a lower level rather than remaining upright throughout the activity.
A route might therefore involve standing and climbing, lowering the body to enter a tunnel, crawling through it and standing again on the other side.

Sliding creates another way to move between levels

The same Soft Play can invite different play as children grow
A multi-route setup does not require every child to use it in exactly the same way.
One child may concentrate on repeatedly climbing and sliding. Another may be interested in the tunnel. Another may connect the stair, platform, slide and tunnel into a longer route.
This flexibility is useful when thinking about gross-motor play because the equipment can provide several movement opportunities without prescribing one fixed sequence that every child must follow.
Think in terms of movement opportunities

Instead, think of Soft Play as a play environment that can provide repeated opportunities for larger body movements. Climbing changes levels, crawling changes body position, sliding provides another route down, and connecting these activities encourages children to move through the environment in different ways.
When choosing or arranging a Soft Play setup with gross-motor play in mind, therefore, look beyond the number of pieces. Consider the movements each component invites and, more importantly, how those movements connect into routes that children can explore again and again.
